Early Life | Jan Koum Success Story
Jan was born in the Rural Areas of Ukraine and Being in the Soviet Era, living in the Rural area was Definitely not Easy. He lived in a house that did not have any Electricity Connection and being in a country that mostly had a Temperature below 0 Degrees. They didn’t have Access to Hot Water Even. To Explore things, More Being Financially Unwell, they Also had to go through Regularity of Hardships as well. Jan with his mother and grandmother decided to move to Mountain View, California in 1992. Jan’s Father didn’t Went With them and Stayed in Ukraine until his death in 1997.
In the US, they were Helped by a Social Support Program to get a Small Two-Bedroom Apartment. During this time, Jan started learning Computer Programming and Networking by Reading Manuals that he used to Purchase from Used Books Store. At the age of 16, he worked as a Cleaner in a Glossary Shop. His Mother Used to Work as a Baby Sitter in Order to Support the Family. He Lost His Mother too in her Battle of Cancer in 2000.
Future Career of Jan Kaum
He Enrolled at San Jose University, Along with which he Started Working in Ernst and Young as a Security Tester. This was the Time in 1997 where he Met his Future Business Partner, Brain Acton. Later in the Same Year, Jan and Brain Got the Biggest Opportunity of their life. They got Selected to work at Yahoo as Infrastructure Engineers. Yahoo back then was just a Startup and was Beginning to grow that’s why Jan left the College and Moved ahead with Yahoo. And that is when his friend Brian Acton helped him in his initial stage. Together they went on to work with Yahoo for more than 9 years. They got to Exposure to Numerous Amount of Knowledge and Experience. They Took a Year Off to Travel and Later Applied to Facebook, Both of them Rejected.
Later in January 2009, Jan bought an iPhone and realized that a 7-month-old App store was in the process of Launching the Whole new Range of apps. This gave him a Brilliant Idea, although the idea itself was at a Very Critical Stage. He was very Clear about three Roots of his App Including:-
- Their service would not carry any Advertising.
- It would have a Satisfying Experience.
- Keeping in Mind the Privacy of Customers.
Starting | Whatsapp Success Story
Having that Setted Up, Jan quickly got the Name “Whatsapp Inc.” Incorporated on his Birthday i.e; 24th Feb 2009. Now, as the work Progressed he Figured out that Whatsapp kept Crashing at a Particular Point and Was not that Popular. This went on for a long time. This built up a great amount of Frustration in Jan at one point, Even lost hope and Felt like Giving Up. Brian helped him to get Motivated and got his act together and asked him to Invest a few More Months and finally Few months down the line help came from Apple in June 2009. They announced the Push Notification Feature Which used to Pin their users when they weren’t Using the App. By August 2009, Whatsapp has no significant growth. This time Jan pursued Brian Acton to join it later in October of 2009.
Brain contacted several old Yahoo colleagues and got together $250,000 Dollars in funding. This earned Brian the tag of Co-founder and since then there was no Look Back. By Early 2014, Whatsapp has Covered a Huge Users Base in Multiple Countries. Later in February 2014, Facebook declared that they were Acquiring Whatsapp in a deal which was one of the biggest acquisitions in Tech history at a Whopping $22 Billion and also Offered a Board member position to Jan Koum in Facebook. However, After some time, he left Facebook due to Internal Disputes.
